Jinty

Jinty

  • 3mm Society etched kit.
  • Mashima motor
  • Society wheels
  • High Level Models Gearbox

The origins of this kits were some time in the bronze age and I was told that it wasn't the easiest to put together. If you ignore the supplied flexi-chassis parts in favor of Sharman bits and can live without slot and tab alignment then it's actually very good. All the bits fit OK and the result looks good to me. Beside, every 3mm layout should have a Jinty shouldn't it ?

2F

ex-LMS 2F

  • George Norton etched kit sold by the 3mm Society.
  • Mashima motor
  • Society wheels
  • High Level Models Gearbox

Model has a solid chassis which isn't one of my best. At some point I'll rebuild it with compensation but as it is the loco works well enough to run the passenger train.

LNER F5

LNER F5 - Crystal Palace Tank

  • Finney & Smith etched kit
  • Mashima motor
  • Society wheels

The solid chassis has been tweaked to give plenty some sideplay for the fore and aft wheels. The locos were used in Scotland, mine doesn't have the autotrain working gear so it can be used on freight.

J39

J39

  • 3mm Society etched kit
  • Mashima motor
  • Society wheels
  • High Level Models Gearbox

My first model with a flexi chassis. To accommodate the movement in the axles (standard Shaman hornblocks are used) the body sits about 1mm higher than it should do. Not a particularly easy kit. A little scratchbuilding is required for small parts as not all have been reproduced when the kit was shrunk down.

  • Finney & Smith etched kit (Shot down from the Connoisseur 7mm kit)
  • Mashima motor
  • Finney wheels
  • High Level Models Gearbox

An excellent and easy to build model. Went together quickly and worked first time. The number should be on the bunker but in all the photos I had at the time it was hidden by dirt so I couldn't tell.

J68 (Buckjumper)

  • Finney & Smith etched kit (Shot down from the Connoisseur 7mm kit)
  • Mashima motor
  • Finney supplied wheels
  • High Level Models Gearbox

My second flexi-chassis and this time it went very well. A very pleasant kit to assemble. For a Scottish engine I need to change the chimney to a stovepipe and add shunters steps.

J79

J79

  • Finney & Smith etched kit (Shot down from the Connoisseur 7mm kit)
  • Mashima motor
  • Sharman wheels

A nice enough kit which I built with a solid chassis. The extra depth of the flanges allow me to get away with this. However the wheels are so deep I couldn't fit the cab steps without jamming the coupling rods. An idea test locomotive as the wheelbase is short enough to expose any electrical gremlins.

  • Mashima motor
  • Finney wheels
  • High Level Models Gearbox

While this model has no place at all at the end of a branch line I've built 7 and 4mm scale versions so I couldn't resist. The gearbox is a tight fit but doesn't impinge on the cab. A solid chassis is fitted but to be honest some flexibility in the non-driven axle would be a benefit as there isn't much space for weight in the body.

Railmotor

ex-LNWR Railmotor

  • Worsley Works etched "scratch aid" kit
  • Mashima motor
  • Scratch built power bogie
  • Society wheels

For the cost, this kit is a bargain. The parts fit well except the back which needs For the cost, this kit is a bargain. The parts fit well except the back which needs to be widened by about 2mm. No motorising details are provided and a Shilito bogie is recommended. This looks nothing like the prototype by building a replacement is easy. The last railcar of this design ended its life on the Moffat branch in BR days, although possibly before the date I'm modelling it !
